OH! Media is proud to announce the launch of the new Regina Symphony Orchestra site! With the start of the 2012/2013 concert season RSO was in need of a new web system that would allow them to easily update their ongoing concerts and community events. We built their new site from the ground up with a fresh design and our very own OH! CMS content management system. With the new site comes many new features…

The homepage slideshow allows administrators to add featured photos and links that grab the immediate attention of the user. This area is used to call attention to any symphony news or upcoming concert series – helping the user find detailed info as quickly as possible!

The ShoWare ticketing system allows the RSO to add concerts series, dates and ticket prices. This allows the user to view detailed information on different concerts as well as purchase tickets right off the site.

Added social media functionality like the Facebook/Twitter badges, Like buttons and live Twitter feed help create a buzz amongst the social community.

The combination of added social media functionality, easy to update CMS features and the ShoWare ticketing system helps Regina Symphony Orchestra get word out and information available for interested members of the community!

RSO Complete Feature List:

We have had several clients ask us how to properly resize and optimize images for use on their websites. In most cases, our clients do not have access to costly software like Photoshop or Fireworks. It was always our go-to to direct them to the popular Picnik photo editing site. Unfortunately as of early this year Picnik has been taken over by Picasa (a photo sharing website acquired by Google). But fear not.. there’s a newbie in town.. introducing the Pixlr online photo editing program! We’ve compiled detailed instructions to help our clients (and anyone that might be interested) resize, optimize and style their images for online use.

Uploading Your Photo:

Visit http://pixlr.com/express/. This is the dashboard of Pixlr.. you can choose from grabbing a photo from your computer (Browse), grabbing one of the net (Open URL), or take one instantly with your webcam! For most people “Browse” would be the appropriate option as you’d likely be editing your own photos.

Open the “Browse” window and select/open the photo you’d like to spruce up.

Once a photo has been uploaded you’ll be guided to the main editing screen which outlays all the options – Adjustments, Effect, Overlay, Border, Sticker and Text.

Resizing/Cropping Your Photo:

Select the “Adjustments” option in the main editing menu. This will bring up a series of options including many options we won’t be utilizing in this tutorial like Rotate, Contrast, Auto Fix, Red Eye etc.

To Resize your photo hit the “Resize” adjustment option. This will open up a new set of tools where your asked to input the size you’d like to resize the photo to. In this case (and most cases) the photo has been taken directly off the camera and is sized at 4000 pixels wide… this is much too wide for use on the web so we’d like to downsize it to something more manageable. 1024 pixels is what we like to think of as our maximum web size.. this size is perfect if you’re going to be displaying your photo in a large format like in a lightbox or photogallery. If you’re planning to place the photo within the content of a website it’s best to lower the dimensions even more so.. 400 pixel width will keep your file size low and can easily be downsized even more in most content management systems (if needed). Once you’ve decided on the appropriate sizing hit “Apply”.

To Crop your photo hit the “Crop” adjustment option. This will open up a new set of tools where your faced with options for the photo’s aspect ratio (1:1, 5:4, 16:9 etc). Click around the different options to find one that best suits your needs. Keep in mind you can always click and drag the crop tool until your happy with the size and placement of the crop. Once you’ve got your crop placed just right hit “Apply” to commit your changes.

Adding Special Effects & Styles To Your Photo:

Pixlr lets you get creative with your photo edits by allowing you options for Effect, Overlay, Border and Stickers. These filters let you customize the color and overall feel of your photos. It includes everything from classic sepia tones to a retro 80’s poster overlay! You have control over the amount of style overlay which makes it easy to add a subtle touch of color or texture to your photos. Once you’ve found your perfect style combo hit “Apply” to make your changes. If you go style trigger happy remember you can always hit “Cancel”!

Adding Text To Your Photo:

Adding text is often something people come to us to do as their basic editing software doesn’t usually allow for this customization. Pixlr allows you not only to add text but choose the placement, size and font type of your text. You can choose from basic serif/sans-serif fonts to more stylized options for handwritten and grunge. Once you select the style of text you’d like to use you can then type out your message, change the font/color and alignment of the type. When you’ve decided on your text style and placement hit “Apply” to save your changes.

Saving/Exporting Your Photo:

Once your all Pixlr’d out you can hit “Save” in the top right corner to save and export your photo. You can choose the quality you want your photo exported in. For highest quality photos you’ll want to stick with anything 85% and up. If maximum quality isn’t important to you there is always the option to downgrade the quality which will also lessen your photo’s file size.

As our About Us page states, OH! Media is a web development company based in Regina, Saskatchewan. Over the last six years, we’ve had many opportunities to work with people that help give Regina it’s own unique, awesome local flavour. Supporting local companies and organizations is very important to us because we also live here and personally benefit from these great people. Today we’re going to look at some of the web work we’ve done locally.

Queen City Marathon – Every September people from all over North America come to the Queen City to participate in the QCM, which is one of the few Boston Marathon qualifying races in Canada. 2011 was another successful year and we are honoured to sponsor such an amazing event.

Schmirler Curling Classic – Like every Saskatchewanian, we watched Team Amber Holland at the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and again at the Worlds. Now we’ve had the honour to work with Amber on this charity event named for one of our greatest curlers, Sandra Schmirler.

Pile o’ Bones Derby Club – It’s a little more rough and tumble than running and curling, but roller derby is just as exciting! These lively, lovely ladies are amazing to work with and amazing to watch.

CJTR – Local community radio, by Reginians for Reginians. You can find local flavour here including gems like Regina Vinyl Preservation Society block. New redesign is in the works!

Regina Family Expo – With dozens of exhibitors, many local, the RFE promotes local business and offers a great event for our wee citizens.

The Comedy Grind – Did you know Regina has its own comedy show? Come to Amateur Night to try your hand at it, or just come to Gabbo’s for some great weekend laughs.

Regina Newcomer Welcome Centre (coming soon) – We also like to help welcome new residents of Regina. The Newcomer Welcome Centre provides resources and information to new immigrants and refugees, including help with our infamous winters!

We’re looking forward to a lot more years of working in our great Regina community! Remember, Pride Lives Here.

As a business it’s essential that your site is stays current. A website with old, outdated content gives you less of an edge over your competitors and can give the impression that you don’t care about your online presence. Though having a web developer make updates to your website can sometimes be costly and may take a few days to complete. But, there is a better and easier way to manage the content on your website that means lower costs and instant turnaround. OH!CMS is a content management product that we developed to allow our clients to quickly and easily update their websites.

We like our system so much that we thought we’d give you 5 great reasons to choose it over the other systems out there.

1. Simple User Interface

OH!CMS was designed with a target audience in mind: small to medium sized business owners who are smart, but may or may not be technically saavy. This means that the interface of OH!CMS is intuitive and easy to navigate. We pride ourselves on how simple it is to effectively manage your site content using our system.

2. Modular and Scalable

Your website needs will grow as your business or organization grows. OH!CMS has this covered. OH! Media has built over a dozen modules for OH!CMS that may be easily installed at any time. From event calendars, to polls, to newsletter deployment, even membership systems. And if you need a specific feature built, we can develop it for you. OH!CMS is fully customizable, and can grow and evolve with your needs.

3. Search Engine Friendly

We understand how important it is to be positioned well in search engines. That’s why we ensure that our CMS follows basic SEO standards. We take the time to implement properly designed layouts and utilize search engine friendly URLs.

4. Support

OH!CMS was built in house by our talented staff, so it’s fair to say that we know every line of code intimately. Open source CMS systems are typically developed by a combination of developers and can be bulky and disorganized, making them a challenge to support. If there is ever an issue with your OH!CMS install, you can rest assured that the problem will be remedied quickly.

5. Version Rollback

Make a mistake? Wish you could back in time and retrieve a previous version of a page? Now you can. OH!CMS includes a page versioning system that allows you to instantly revert to any previously saved version of a page, quickly and without hassle.

We could go on and on about benefits of our custom CMS system. If you need more convincing watch our overview video or give us a call and we’d be happy to take you on a guided tour.

Another happy client!

I wish every business was as creative, responsive, receptive and oriented toward excellence in their product as OH! We have been working with this stellar group for 4 years and after having bounced around trying to find programmers that knew what they were doing but able and willing to respond to our evolving needs, we finally found our ‘home’ with Trent and his team. They have a refreshing balance of ‘logic’ and creativity, open to ideas but willing to let you know what they think works best and why. We have had numerous compliments on our website and we couldn’t be happier – it is incredibly easy to update the site and during the transition to their new CMS, the team was always available to assist us. Trust me when I say you can STOP LOOKING – your search for the best website team should end with OH!

On Monday, June 6th, the Regina Leader Post newspaper published an article “Software for Hard Bodies” on the front page of their business section. We are absolutely thrilled with the way it turned out and love all the attention we are receiving from the media exposure.

Below is an excerpt:

Web application tracks repairs

“IF YOUR EQUIPMENT IS DOWN LESS, YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY, YOUR RETENTION RATE IS HIGHER (AND) YOU HAVE MORE MEMBERS.”

Skye Kaiss had a problem. He was working out one day when the equipment he was using broke down.

His solution? A partnership between four Regina businessmen and a new company, Club Vitals.

“All equipment degrades. All equipment breaks down,” said Kaiss, co-owner of Regina’s two Gold’s Gym locations.

When a piece of equipment breaks down, the user has to report it to staff. Kaiss found that users either weren’t reporting damaged equipment or when they did, the information was being lost or repairs were slow to be made.

Read the entire article on the Leader Post website.

Wow, what a month so far! We’ve been launching sites left and right! Here are some details on a few that we’ve recently set live…

MAXX Energy Solutions Corp.

Website: http://maxxenergysolutions.com/

MAXX Energy Solutions was yet another great client to work with! MAXX Energy is an oilfield equipment company that prides themselves on delivering turnkey innovative products and services that increase productivity and resolve common issues that arise in the oil and gas industry. We helped develop the MAXX Energy Solutions brand with their logo and website. The MAXX Energy site is powered by our very own OH!CMS (Content Management System), which allows them to update info on new equipment, important company news and career opportunities.

Stonewood Builders Inc.

Website: http://stonewoodbuilders.ca/

We had a great experience working with Kyle on the site for his company Stonewood Builders, a local custom-work construction company. Stonewood Builders Inc. is a relatively new company on the Regina building scene but is one that does beautiful custom work on everything from complete new home construction to full renovations and specialized projects like home gyms and outdoor decks. We helped develop Kyle’s company with the complete branding on everything from logo, business cards, QR codes, web and mobile sites. The Stonewood Builders site is powered by our in house OH!CMS (Content Management System) which allows for updating at any time. With updateable photo galleries and a blog-style “Current Projects” page Kyle will be able to keep his current and prospective clients informed on his recent projects! Kyle’s laid back attitude and strong work ethic has made working with him a positive experience, we’d recommend them to anyone!

Chitt-Tronics Ltd.

Website: http://www.chittronics.com/

Working with the folks at Chitt-Tronics has made our job so much easier! Their motivation to get the new site up has helped us get the site live in record time. Chitt-Tronics serves Montmartre, Kipling and neighboring communities with the newest consumer electronics and Sasktel products and services. The Chitt-Tronics Ltd. site uses WordPress as it’s content management system. Their new site not only incorporates a fresh new look it’s also loaded with great new features like an easily updatable catalog system, where staff can do price and product updates on their own. Their news section has been integrated with their existing Facebook page to help them reach both their web and Facebook audiences more efficiently. Don’t forget to sign-up for their e-newsletter (powered by Mail-Chimp), where they’ll be sending out company news and product sales!

Saskatchewan Nurses Foundation

Website: http://www.saskatchewannursesfoundation.org/

Another record fast site we did this month was for the Saskatchewan Nurses foundation. A non-profit Regina based foundation that gathers donations for bursaries towards nurses in Saskatchewan who choose to further their education. The fresh new site was set live just in time for their annual conference this month. SNF is supported by donations from SNF members, members of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association (SRNA), Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN), nursing school alumnae associations, corporate groups, and individuals. These donations can come in forms of personal donations and “in memory” donations and bequests. Donations are often put towards lowering tuition/book cost and student living. The new site is powered by our own OH!CMS (Content Management System) and includes social media links, Canadahelps donation button, online membership application and more.
